Missanabie-Cree First Nation Secures NOMAD Power System to Anchor Emergency Hub Amid Seasonal Flood Threat

February 2, 20264 min readBy NOMAD Power Team

WATERBURY, VT [Febuary 2, 2026] NOMAD Transportable Power Systems today announced the sale of a NOMAD Traveler mobile battery energy storage system (BESS) to the Missanabie-Cree First Nation. The unit will serve as the core power infrastructure for a temporary relocation camp, set to be operational by April 1, 2026, providing essential services for community members displaced by recurring seasonal flooding.

The project is a critical race against time to ensure a safe, powered refuge before the annual spring thaws force residents to evacuate their remote homes. The Missanabie-Cree First Nation has allocated funds from a $30 million grant to secure the infrastructure, including the purchase of the NOMAD Traveler 1MW/2.0MWh system. This investment underscores the urgent need for resilient and rapidly deployable energy solutions to address climate-driven emergencies.

The NOMAD Traveler will provide reliable, on-demand power for the camp's housing, medical facilities, and communications, integrating with the local grid managed by Algonquin Power. This hybrid approach significantly reduces the reliance on diesel generators, lowering fuel costs, noise, and harmful emissions in a sensitive environment.

"This project is about more than just electricity; it's about providing safety, dignity, and stability for a community during a time of crisis," said Chris McKay, COO of NOMAD Power. "Our mobile energy systems are designed for exactly this type of scenario, where reliable power is needed urgently, but permanent infrastructure isn't feasible. We are honored to partner with the Missanabie-Cree First Nation and are committed to meeting the April 1 deadline."

Chief Jason Gauthier of the Missanabie-Cree First Nation highlighted the project's dual benefits of safety and sustainability. "Our primary goal is the safety of our people when the floods come, but we also must prioritize clean and green energy. This project provides a critical lifeline for our displaced members while aligning with our values. Securing their well-being with reliable, clean power through battery storage is a true win-win. This is the future, and for us, it starts with ensuring our community is protected."
